Your Midlife Drinking Type is:
Firefighter

Your drinking habits have become your primary stress management tool, and alcohol feels like the most reliable way to put out the fires from your day.

But deep down,  you know there's another way...

❓ How the Firefighter Pattern Takes Over

You’ve been managing mounting pressure for years: work deadlines, family demands, endless to-do lists… and the 5pm ritual that promises relief.

You find yourself watching the clock, counting down to that first drink because it’s the only thing that feels like it actually works to help you relax.

You know exactly when stress takes over, and you reach for alcohol almost reflexively because nothing else cuts through the tension quite like it does.

You have other coping strategies in theory, but when push comes to shove, they feel too slow, too subtle or too much effort compared to the instant relief of a glass of wine or a beer.

You know that it’s time for a change, but the thought of facing stress without your most trusted tool feels genuinely frightening.

🚷 Where the Firefighter Pattern Leads

So things carry on carrying on until one day you wake up and realise...

  • The stress-drink-crash-stress cycle is getting tighter and harder to break.

  • Alcohol is taking the edge off your evenings, but adding to the stress, tiredness and pressure you’re frequently carrying into the next day.

  • Every difficult day is starting to feel like a fire that only alcohol can put out.

⏩ Instead...

Picture yourself at 5pm on a tough day, feeling that familiar stress rising.

But before reaching for a drink, you give yourself sixty seconds to actually name what's still burning — the meeting that went badly, the kids pushing your last button, the jobs still sitting there when you've got nothing left.

Not to fix any of it. Just to stop carrying it as one big blur of pressure.

Then you do one small thing — notifications off, out of your work clothes, ten minutes outside, or just sitting still and doing nothing.

It's not about competing with the drink; it's just putting a few moments between the fire and your reaction to it.

And in those moments, you get to actually decide — not just react.

That's what changing the Firefighter pattern looks like: alcohol stops being your emergency response to every stressful day.

Meet your Mindful Drinking Mentor

Hi, I'm Denise Hamilton-Mace (Dee, to friends), and I've been drinking differently for over 5 years now. After a 24-year stint in hospitality, drinking alcohol daily and partying like it was 1999, it wasn't until one hangover too many and a very upset little boy that I decided it was time to start taking back the power of choice from alcohol.

Now, as a podcast host, writer and public speaker on all things moderation in midlife,  I'm on a mission to help as many people as possible to do the same, all on their own terms.

Welcome to your life less intoxicated!
